FAQ'S

STANDARD LABRADOODLE:

"Men who say it cannot be done, should not interrupt those doing it." Chinese proverb

 "Bosco" is a  Chocolate  labradoodle

"Faith" is a Black Labradoodle

DID YOU KNOW??? Most dogs are not able to focus on objects closer than about 10 inches. They can see more clearly than humans can in dim light.

Carly - Mother of our Labradoodle Standards     Abraham is a standard black poodle

Labradoodles  come from the joining of 2 purebred dogs. The male is usually a Standard Poodle, and the female is a Labrador Retriever. Labradoodles are a medium large dog with an average weight of about 40 - 60 pounds for the female and 55 - 77 pounds for the male with  a height of 20 - 24 inches. The lifespan is 12 - 15 years.

These labradoodles, like wolfdogs, are not hybrids - They are a cross-breed. Hybrid is an out-dated term - The term "hybrid," by the way, is controversial. Some purists feel that hybrid should only be used to describe the offspring that results when two separate species are bred -- such as a lion and a tiger.

Cross-breds, like labradoodles, can produce, (unlike a  mule - a hybrid which is sterile) so neutering and spaying is a good idea.

All of our labradoodles  are currently F1 generation - This is to keep a healthier, sounder PET than either the Lab or the Poodle!

We do not guarantee that the labradoodle will be able to live with people with allergies. Please, before you buy, spend some time with a poodle or labradoodle to see if you are allergic to the dander or saliva of the dog. We do not want to place a puppy with a family only to have it brought back or taken to a shelter  because of someone's allergies. You need to be sure and research this thoroughly before you bring the puppy home.

We will gladly take the puppy back to keep it from going to a shelter - However, we will NOT refund any money.

Labradoodles - even the name conjures up a wonderful dog. This dog is for those that want a bigger dog, one that people with allergies to dander can usually raise with the personality of a Labrador and poodle combined. Standard Poodles are intelligent and easy to train, with very little shedding.  Labrador Retrievers  are playful, trustworthy and  a great companion. The combination of the two gives you a Labradoodles -  the size of a lab, with wavy or curly hair, fun-loving, extremely smart and loyal - Plus minimal or no doggy odor

A bonus to this is the fact that they are less pro to health problems!

Many breed specific illnesses are avoided. This is called "hybrid vigor."

Remember that the best Hybrid Vigor Dog is your 1st Generation Dog

A Recent Article published with CKC states  "Mixed Breed Poodle Dogs are healthier and have less problems than Pure Breds."

DID YOU KNOW??? Dogs can smell the presence of autism in children.

Labradoodles have been around for 30 + years!!!

COATS

The F1 generation labradoodle coat type  is discovered after the puppies are born - most are wavy or flat coats. The F2 generation labradoodle will have more of a curly coat.  F2 backcross puppies  are from 'Doodles bred BACK to Poodles. Backcross puppies give you a much higher percentage of Poodle, supposedly making them more suitable for allergy sufferers than first generation pups. However, we do not claim that our 'doodles are "allergy safe". There is no such thing as a totally non-shedding breed or a hypo-allergenic one. In the first place, most people are allergic to dander and/or saliva rather than hair, so shedding is usually a non-issue.

In one litter, there could be one or two curlier coated puppies  which will develop into curly dogs, and there could be others which start off as curly, but which by about eight months of age, could drop out their fluffy baby coat and develop a more wiry coat which will shed. Some grow up to look very similar to a Golden Retriever with thinner coat, or like a Labrador with a few whiskery hairs around its face and sometimes on the legs.  Curly or Wavy coats appear in each litter, just as there are different coat types in many other breeds.

The length of the coat is anywhere from 4 to 6 inches  long. Texture should be quite similar to that of an Angora goat.

Flat Coat - these are always more hair, than wool or fleece textured, and will definitely shed to some degree.  Are lowest maintenance of all.

Those with wavy coats may shed a little, or a lot. The coat is long with wavy hair. Brushing is fairly easy. And the coat is beautiful. This is probably not the type of coat you want if you are very serious about dealing with allergens.

Those with curly coats (tight curls like a poodle) will need some maintenance as the hair continues to grow - like a poodle. Clipping is recommended, as is brushing nightly. Keeping the longer coat  free of mattes requires more grooming. This coat is usually non-shedding, which is more allergy friendly.

Borderline coats  sometimes called fleece coats (loose curls over entire body) are most times non-shedding. Has a soft feel. Should be fairly friendly for those with allergies. Being borderline, the coat can go either way as the puppy fur grows into the adult coat.  This coat also needs time for grooming.

Not all labradoodles will inherit the non-shedding characteristics but the majority do, as the Poodle coat seems to have a degree of genetic dominance over the Lab coat.

Sex, Color, Coat Type and litter due dates are not guaranteed.
You pick your pup as your name falls on the deposit list - First come first serve.
If we don't have the puppy you are looking for, you go to the top of the next available litter.

Genetics 101 for the Layman:

Remember that although I have used Percentages, each puppy has a different make-up: For example, a puppy that has a lab parent and a poodle parent may have 50/50 or it may have 49/51 or any assortment of possibilities - That is why the coat is so hard to predict when the puppies are young.

The 1st Generation Labradoodle  (F1)is the 50 % Standard Poodle and 50 % Labrador Retriever.

The 2nd Generation (F1B) is the Labradoodle bred back to a Standard Poodle and is 75 % Poodle and 25 % Labrador Retriever ,

A Multi Generation Labradoodle is a Labradoodle bred to Labradoodle, or sometimes bred back to poodle for coat correction, etc. Also a Multi generation is 15/16 Poodle and considered 98/99 % Poodle. And the more generations you go the more you are losing some Lab traits.

Temperament

An Ideal Dog!!

Although the labradoodle puppies can be quite active, as adults they are rated a "medium" in activity and "average" for exercise needs.

The Labradoodle is good with children and are easy to train. They get along well with other dogs. Extremely clever, sociable and joyful. Quick to learn unusual or special tasks. Active, a little comical at times. Can attempt to outsmart their owners if undisciplined. Friendly, though obviously loyal to their own family.

Non-aggressive.

Most labradoodle pups inherit a nice mix of temperament and as such make wonderful family companions. Labradoodles crave the companionship of their human families. If you want a dog to leave outside in the yard, and just be around it when you feed it, or want a guard dog, forget the Labradoodle. They need your time and attention.

HISTORY:

First bred in Australia in the 1970's as guide dogs for people who could not  tolerate  dogs due to allergies.  Their intelligence and loyalty has made them  a  favorite among family's. It's early origins trace back to a gentleman called Don Evans, although credit is usually given to the Guide Dog Associations -  (Wally Cochran, "official  founder of the  Labradoodle")  due to the media coverage gained at that time as the search for a low allergy Guide Dog led to the breeding of Labradoodles.  (Description courtesy of Rutland Manor Labradoodles))
In the 1980's he was trying to find a hypo-allergenic guide dog for a blind woman in Hawaii, and bred the  Labradoodle.
